I think medical education is ripe for transformation right now. In many ways, medical students today are still being taught the way I was taught 25 or 30 years ago. And I was probably taught in a way that was very similar to how my predecessors were taught 30 years before then. It is time to teach medical students differently.
A lot of things that I learned through memorization, just learning all the facts, are now so readily available at my fingertips. I still need to understand the concepts. But memorizing all the details, I think, more and more can go away.
I am starting to hear about medical schools incorporating more AI into their education. And I don’t just mean classes on AI, but really letting medical students use ChatGPT and other tools for their medical education.
It’s funny because for some older physicians, even younger ones, that sort of feels like cheating. No, this is how young people are learning. This is going to be around them for the rest of their lives. We might as well let this be a tool that they use for their education now.
