A lot of physicians feel in some ways under attack. When I say things like, “A community health worker with ChatGPT can outperform the vast majority of physicians around the world,” it feels like, well, what is a physician for? I will come back to a couple of things that are important.
I really think physicians continue to be at the heart of the healthcare system. Every 10 or 20 years, there’s a prediction that we won’t need doctors in the future because of this technology or that technology. It turns out that every technology makes the physician’s role even more important.
Because I fundamentally believe that while the knowledge we have in our heads, you can get that from an AI system. But the judgment, the caring, the relationship, the commitment that we have to our patients — no AI system is going to replace that.
